What Pool Options & Accessories Should I Consider When Building or Remodeling My Pool?

Building or remodeling a pool can be expensive, plain and simple. And once it’s completed, your pool area is definitely the star of your backyard. So, before you give the okay for any construction—both for a new pool or for any remodeling, make sure that you’re getting everything on your wish list before the crews start working. Otherwise, the price of those options and accessories will most likely go up if you add them after any construction is finished.

Build Your Dream

Just to keep things simple and to put us all on the same page, let’s pretend your pool building or remodeling plans are very basic—for now. Like, THE basics: A pool. From here, there are so many options and accessories you can choose from, and we definitely don’t want you to feel overwhelmed with all that we’re going to share. Think of this blog post as your one-stop guide to designing your dream pool, and then pick and choose what you want to include in your pool build or remodel.

  • Pool interior finish: Painted concrete (needs to be repainted about every 5 years), plaster finish (lasts about 10-15 years), or cement-coated finishes like Pebble Tec (should last for the lifetime of your pool).
  • Depth: How deep different areas of your pool will be and how your pool will gradually go from shallow to deep.
  • Decking and decking finishes: How much decking would you like to have? What finishes for your decking? Here are some finishing options: Wood, tile, concrete, natural stone, slate, deck coatings, inlays, pavers, stamped concrete, and more. Be sure and understand both the maintenance needs and safety aspects (will it be slippery?) of the decking finishes you choose.
  • Ports in decking for volleyball and other sports nets.
  • Heater
  • Pump
  • Filter
  • Water treatment system
  • Vacuum
  • Lighting: In the pool and in decking, landscaping, overhead, and wherever you’d like some extra light at night. There are also many fixture options depending on what you’re going for.

Build Your Dream

  • Saltwater or chlorine system.
  • Outdoor kitchen: Grill, refrigerator, patio heater, a bar, prep space, a freezer, and more.
  • Spa.
  • Stairs and/or ladders.
  • Fire pits, fireplaces, fire walls, and/or fire bowls.
  • Water features: Things like scuppers, waterfalls, jets, sheer descents, grottos, and bubblers can be nice additions to your pool.
  • Landscaping within and near the pool area including grass, flower beds, trees, etc.
  • Safety options: Fences, pool alarms, door alarms, pool covers, and so on.
  • Tanning ledge: This option that is only about 6” deep can be used for tanning, giving littler kids (and pets!) a place to splash around more safely, relaxing, and socializing.
  • Patio area around the pool (in addition to decking).
  • Finish aspects you might not think about: Mosaic, different tile options, natural stone, pebbles, beads, etc.
  • Storage areas for all your fun pool toys.
  • Pool coping: Pool coping is the protective cap for the edge of your pool. You can choose from top mount, cantilever edge, flat mount, bullnose, exposed aggregate, and square edge. Pool coping also has several options as far as the materials used: Concrete, pavers, travertine, marble, brick, sandstone, flagstone, bluestone, and more. You can also choose to have your pool’s decking extend over the edge of the pool, eliminating the need for coping.
  • Infinity/vanishing edge pool.
  • Diving board.
  • Slide.
  • Pergola, gazebo, or other structures that can provide shade and extra gathering spaces.
